Look, in one commit! ...
- test build alpha splash
- version update to 239 in code
- release names are 2.40-alpha1
Note about release names; this is really an alpha still, not a release
candidate, so cannot call it 2.40-pre either.
Naming conventions is a discussion still... hope this works as a compromise
for now.
