b113e848ef NDOF: implement new methods to pick the orbit-center
Note: this is a back-port from `main`, details below,
Original message:

Add support for dynamic NDOF orbit center calculation.

- When "Auto" NDOF preference is enabled:
  All visible objects in the viewport are used to calculate a
  bounding box center, if the bounds are outside the view or the center
  is behind the viewport, use a Z-Buffer test to calculate the depth in
  the middle of the region.

- When "Use Selected Items" NDOF preferences is enabled,
  calculating the bounds from the selection.

- An option to show the orbit center as a guide has also been added.

8af27ce27e Fix #133969: Crazyspace broken with bezier curves and armature modifier
The issue was that the topology of the drawing changes when the bezier
curves get resampled to poly curves in the armature modifier.
This means that the crazyspace code fails to find deformed positions
with the same length as the original positions.

The fix does multiple things:
* First, we make sure that we create an `GeometryComponentEditData` in
  weight paint mode.
* When the armature modifier runs, we remember the current positions in
  this component.
* Then, we store the curve offsets and weights _before_ converting the
   bezier curves.
* Finally we deform the positions stored in the edit hint component
   (which have the same length as the original positions).

Since the resampling just adds new points, there might be a way to
avoid running the armature deformation a second time on the edit
hints, but I'll leave that for another day as a performance improvement.
In any case, this is only done when we actually need the deformation
(e.g. in weight paint mode when we paint the weights).

97a1b9b473 Fix #134003: Grease Pencil: Deleting vgroup shifts other vgroup content
`def_nr` is decremented twice, this results in shuffling of vgroupdata.
`remove_from_vertex_group` should only deal with weights and not tweak

1f88645728 UI: Draw loading icon while previews load
Show a dimmed loading icon while previews are being loaded in a
background thread. The asset shelf and asset/file browsers do this
similarly already.

This is implemented in drawing code, so the loading icon will always
appear when an in-progress preview is being drawn. I experimented with
doing this in `ui_def_but_icon()`, but this won't update correctly with
popups that don't support full refreshing.

This also makes any normal icon that is drawn as preview use the normal
icon size. These icons are usually made for smaller sizes and look very
outblown when displayed at the size of a preview. Yet it's useful to
sometimes pass a normal icon. E.g. for the asset shelf we would already
draw the data-block type icon in place of the preview if there was no
preview to display, and we'd use the normal, smaller size already.
Larger can still be drawn differently.
I don't know of any current cases this would affect though.

7acd7e1246 UI: Rewrite asset shelf preview loading
- Fixes preview flickering on actions like undo/redo in the asset shelf (#93726), not yet for the
  file browser.
- Fixes #130861.

Makes the asset shelf use the asynchronous preview loading system of the UI instead of the file
browser one. The issues above where mostly caused by the file browser caching design.

The asset system and its UIs can now manage previews independently of the file browser back-end.
This is another step towards making the asset system independent of the file browser, see
https://developer.blender.org/docs/features/asset_system/fundamentals/from_file_browser_to_asset_system/.
Code to query asset previews through file browser types is removed.

Quite some work was done to prepare the UI preview system for this, to make it on par with the file
browser preview system. E.g.: 9d83061ed4, 315e7e04a8, 5055adc1c0, 16ab6111f7.

Note that the same change should be done to the asset/file browser, but this requires more work.

dc8b2c4bf7 Fix #133096: Specialized function to copy Grease Pencil layers from other objects
Grease Pencil layers can only be duplicated on the same object. Duplicating layers
from other objects will not insert the drawings into the target object and just
assume that drawing indices remain valid, which is not the case. The subsequent
drawing index user update crashes Blender.

This fix adds a new `copy_frames_from_layer` function that makes a full copy
of layer data, regardless of where that layer originates from. This is safe to use
with layers that live in other objects.

3c9a71b46f Fix #132465: Align Alembic/USD crease values with that of OpenSubdiv
In order to better interop with the broader Alembic/USD ecosystem, align
the crease values we export with what we believe is expected by native
OpenSubdiv, a 0-10 range.

On import we will translate the native OpenSubdiv range back into
Blender's 0-1 range.

To account for SubD assets produced by Blender before this change, a
compat check is put in place for both Alembic and USD to use the old
methodology when encountering such files. The compat check makes use
of the Blender version we place inside the format's metadata fields. Old
assets loaded into a new Blender will look ok. New assets loaded into an
old Blender would need to be reworked.

59f9e93413 Mesh: Avoid computing vertex normals for corner normals
The algorithm to calculate face corner normals had a vertex normal
input, with the intention to pre-populate corner normals for vertices
with no sharp connected edges. However corner normals are calculated
separately for these fully sharp vertices later anyway, so this whole
step was completely redundant. Removing the vertex normals calculation
reduces memory usage and improves performance. In a test file with a
character with custom normals, this changed improved the playback FPS
by 15%, from 41 to 47 FPS. The impact will usually be lower than that
but it should be noticeable in other scenes too.

de31cecfaf Fix #133731: Performance issue with many stashed actions
When duplicating an action, it is stashed in the NLA on a muted track.
Over time this can slow down blender, because certain code will look at every

b166fa46b8 Anim: set Action.idroot when writing blend file, for forward compat
When writing an Action to a blend file, for forward compatability
reasons the animation data in the first slot is also written to the old
Animato Action storage locations. That way, loading the Action in an
older version of Blender will still at least have that animation data.

However, we overlooked `Action.idroot`, which indicates which ID
type the Action is for, and therefore all Actions have an unspecified
`idroot` when loaded in pre-layered-action versions of Blender.

This PR fixes that by also setting the `idroot` to match the target ID
type of the first slot when writing to disk.

a806f1c866 Curves: Optimization of ed::curves::duplicate_points
Adds new function `foreach_content_slice_by_offsets` that gathers mask's
indices into `IndexRange` lists grouped by given offsets. New approach
doesn't need temporary `points_to_duplicate` array of size
`curves.points_num()`. Traversal is more effective as only selected
indices get visited. Also point data is copied by point ranges instead
of point by point.

Performance was tested with following code:
```cpp
TEST(curves_geometry, DuplicatePoints)
{
  CurvesGeometry curves = create_basic_curves(100000, 100);
  IndexMaskMemory memory;
  IndexMask every_second = IndexMask::from_predicate(
      curves.points_range(), GrainSize(100), memory, [](const int i) {
        return bool(i % 2);
      });
  for (const int i : IndexRange(1000)) {
    CurvesGeometry copy = curves;
    const int expected_point_count = copy.points_num() + every_second.size();
    ed::curves::duplicate_points(copy, every_second);
    EXPECT_EQ(copy.points_num(), expected_point_count);
  }
}
7f4cf5a949 Fix #124566: Compositor Normal node does not update
Changes to the compositor Normal node does not propagate and the
compositor result is not updated. That's because the node is a special
case since its output socket value is used as its input property, which
is not tracked by the node update code.
Apparently, a similar node exists in shader nodes, and a workaround is
implemented for that node in the node updater, so we just need to extend
that check to include the compositor node as well.
b51c560f6e Compositor: Implement shortcuts for Viewer nodes
Artists often want to quickly switch back and forth between two or more nodes while compositing.
This patch implements two operators `NODE_OT_viewer_shortcut_set` and `NODE_OT_viewer_shortcut_get` that allow users to map a viewer node to a shortcut. For example, pressing `cltr+1` while a node is selected, assigns that node to the shortcut `1`, creates a viewer node if it has none attached and sets that viewer node to active. Pressing `1` will set the active node with shortcut `1` to active.
Shortcuts are saved in DNA to preserve them after saving/loading blend files.
Limitations:
- Only compositor node tree is supported, because shading editor has no viewer node and geometry nodes viewer works differently.
e1753900b7 BLI: improve UTF-8 safety when copying StringRef to char buffers
Previously, there was a `StringRef.copy` method which would copy the string into
the given buffer. However, it was not defined for the case when the buffer was
too small. It moved the responsibility of making sure the buffer is large enough
to the caller.
Unfortunately, in practice that easily hides bugs in builds without asserts
which don't come up in testing much. Now, the method is replaced with
`StringRef.copy_utf8_truncated` which has much more well defined semantics and
also makes sure that the string remains valid utf-8.
This also renames `unsafe_copy` to `copy_unsafe` to make the naming more similar
to `copy_utf8_truncated`.
f5b1a4625d UI: Allow drawing icons as drag previews, use for dragging assets
Instead of requiring an image buffer to draw a bigger preview image
while dragging, allow passing an icon ID and draw that as preview. This
is also how we draw previews elsewhere. Use this for attaching the asset
previews to draggable buttons.
A small user visible change is that previews from the asset browser will
always draw at the default size (multiplied by the interface scale)
while dragging. Previously it used the same size as the asset browser
preview size, which I don't think was useful really. With small sizes
the preview while dragging got unnecessarily small too, with big sizes
it got in the way.
2fda20e1db Fix #132099: crash when using same geometry on objects with different material counts
The core issue was that the geometry batch cache (e.g. `MeshBatchCache` or
`PointCloudBatchCache`) was dependent on the object. This is problematic when
the the same geometry is used with multiple different objects because the cache
can't be consistent with all of them.
Fortunately, the only thing that was retrieved from the object was the number of
material slots, so if that can be avoided we should be fine. We can't just use
the number of material slots stored on the geometry because that may have no
material slots but still has material indices which are overridden on the object
level.
The solution is to take make the number of materials for a geometry only
dependent on the actual `material_index` attribute and not on the number of
available slots. More specifically, we find the maximal referenced material
index and handle that many materials. This number does not depend on how many
material slots there are on the object, but it still allows the object to
override materials slots that the mesh references.
A downside is that the maximum material index has to be computed which often
requires an iteration over the mesh. Fortunately, we can cache that quite easily
and the computation can be done in parallel. Also we are probably able to
eagerly update the material index in many cases when it's set instead of
computing it lazily. That is not implemented in this patch though.
The largest part of the patch is making the maximal material index easily
available on all the geometry types. Besides that, the material API is slightly
replaced and the drawing code now makes use of the updated API.
619d9e4e01 Fix #98559: support applying Geometry Nodes through multires modifier
Before, it was only possible to apply modifiers through a multires modifier if
they were deform-only. The Geometry Nodes modifier is of course not deform-only.
However, often one can build a node setup, that only deforms and does nothing
else.
To make it possible to apply the Geometry Nodes modifier in such cases the
following things had to be done:
* Update `BKE_modifier_deform_verts` to work with modifiers that implement
  `modify_geometry_set` instead of `deform_verts`.
* Add error handling for the case when `modify_geometry_set` does more than just
  deformation.
* Allow the Geometry Nodes modifier to be applied through a multi-res modifier.
Two new utility types (`ArrayState` and `MeshTopologyState`) have been
introduced to allow for efficient and accurate checking whether the topology has
been modified. In common cases, they can detect that the topology has not been
changed in constant time, but they fall back to linear time checking if it's not
immediately obvious that the topology has not been changed.
This works with the example files from #98559 and #97603.
a449625fc4 Curves: make material index attribute builtin on curves geometry
means that it's built-in on `Curves` and `GreasePencil`. While only Grease
Making the attribute built-in implies that it is locked to one domain and type
e07cd2b982 Cleanup: Remove unused and transitive includes in draw module
Especially through DRW_render.hh, there were a lot of unnecessary
includes almost everywhere in the module. This typically makes
dependencies less explicit and slows down compile times, so switch
to including what files actual use.
ef8808d990 Cleanup: Compositor: Ghost data of a node storage
Since 4cf7fc3b3a (where a storage handling being added) a render layer node never has persist storage data.
And even more, some code of node update do use storage field as temporal variables for a callback so no any data can live forever in this place.
No one copy/initialize/free callback of the node also does not deal with node storage.
And compositor code also don't know about node storage since use different data from a node (id and custom1 fields).
2a52ca42bd Fix #131836: Texture paint: "Texture Mask" stencil is not drawing
Reason for this is that all the brushes in essentials assets have a zero
default `mask_stencil_pos` / `mask_stencil_dimension`.
At that time, they have been created resetting a brush to defaults and
using that as a starting point.
At that time though, these settings didnt have a default (which
b2dd308dca fixed, so that method should not result in those settings
being zero).
The brushes in essentials assets still do though, now correct these in
versioning code.
e0479e2fb4 Geometry Nodes: Use OpenColorIO for luminance
Color to grayscale conversions should take into account the colorspace,
and these are considered to be in scene linear colorspace.
